Dollar Academy recently concluded its inaugural Good Food Week, a week-long celebration promoting healthy eating habits, culinary education and community engagement. The event, spearheaded by the academy’s caterers, Thomas Franks Scotland, featured a variety of engaging activities and initiatives designed to inspire a love for nutritious and delicious food among students.
Throughout the week, pupils were treated to a diverse array of culinary experiences, each day featuring unique themes and activities. From workshops on plant-based cooking to awareness sessions on food poverty and nutritional education, Good Food Week aimed to instil a deeper understanding of the importance of balanced and wholesome eating habits.
Highlights from the week included the Plant 30 workshops on Monday, where Prep school pupils delved into the world of plant-based cuisine, and Food Poverty Day on Tuesday, which focused on raising awareness about accessible and affordable ingredients. Wednesday’s Seasonal Surplus activities highlighted the significance of local, in-season produce while addressing the issue of food waste.
Thursday’s Nutritional Day featured a menu filled with healthy options, alongside a community lunch at The Hive where students served meals they had helped prepare. The week culminated in Friday’s Celebration & Treat Day, providing students with an opportunity to reflect on their culinary journey and indulge in some well-deserved treats.
Robin Pyper, Deputy Rector at Dollar Academy, commented, ‘We were absolutely delighted with how our inaugural Good Food Week went at Dollar Academy. The pupils, who learned a great deal, were challenged to take their new-found interests and knowledge and positively influence others beyond the Academy. We are already looking forward to the next Good Food Week.’
A thank you to George Anderson, TF Scotland’s fruit and veg supplier, Bidfood, and Shaws Fine Meats for their contributions to Dollar Academy’s inaugural Good Food Week. George Anderson and TF Scotland’s dedication to providing quality fruits and vegetables, Bidfood’s efforts in setting up fantastic food displays, and Shaws Fine Meats’ generous donation of meat for the community lunch pie have all played integral roles in making this event a success.
Margaret Fowler, Commercial Manager at Thomas Franks Scotland, shared her enthusiasm for the success of Good Food Week, stating, ‘We are thrilled to have partnered with Dollar Academy to bring Good Food Week to life. It’s been incredibly rewarding to see students engage with the various activities and embrace the importance of healthy eating.
